The original text shows Romeo killing Paris in the Capulet tomb in the end of the play. Why does director Zefferelli cut this scene from his film?

In addition to filling the position of holy man, Friar Lawrence is a confidante to Romeo and Juliet. He is instrumental to their marriage and course of actions. Did you expect Friar Lawrence to abandon Juliet as he did in the end of the play? What do you think was most pressing on his mind?

Does Romeo know about love?

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 12:03 pm

Here are some interesting lines pulled from Romeo as he weeps over Rosaline.

Romeo: 195 ….she’ll not be hit with Cupid’s arrow, she hath Dian’s wit;
And in strong proof of chastity well arm’d
From love’s weak childish bows she lives uncharm’d.

Essentially, Romeo is being melodramatic and expresses Rosaline will not love him back. Not words, riches, or even Cupid has power over her. She is a virgin and she has armor to protect her.

Romeo speaks about love as if it were a magical force to be deposited upon the head of the one you admire. Do you agree? How does love develop? What ingredients are necessary?

Some fools be trippin’ in the streets of Verona, see? In this town, it’s all about numbers baby boo, and you’ve either got fat stacks of coin or you’re rolling with your crew and looking for a Capulet or a Montague.

Streets be leaping with dust and passer-bys best be not sleeping. The sword is drawn, the word, the frown, any small gesture or reason to take one of those fools down. Yelps and cries, mothers dry your eyes, no one leaves without blood in the sudden heat-killing oven.

The Capulets and Montagues be brawlin’ since the dawn of time and I never leave my house without my sword and mine.

But today the POLICE-PRINCE has passed himself a new law — anyone disturb the streets with cussin’ or a fight, well you can say goodbye to your bold-brawlin’ life.

Directions: Have you ever witnessed or been a part of a territorial dispute? For example: the neighbor keeps bringing his sheep past the fence to feed on your grass; boys from another school crash your high school dance; students from out of town wreck your homecoming float — I think you get the idea. I will post an experience from when I was younger below.
